Vaccines to be given in Dialysis Patients

Although most of the infections can be prevented by vaccination today, reluctance towards vaccination and treating the vaccine as if it is only for childhood cause ignoring the vaccinations that should be done in adulthood. Vaccination is extremely important, especially in immunosuppressed individuals. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are more susceptible than the normal population to many infections that cause adverse outcomes and even death.

Infections have an important place among the causes of death in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Most of these deaths are due to vaccine-preventable diseases. All routine vaccinations (diphtheria-tetanus, hepatitis B, pneumococcal and seasonal influenza) as well as special vaccinations should be given to these patients. Vaccination rates in dialysis patients are still not at the desired level. All routine vaccines (diphtheria-tetanus, hepatitis B, pneumococcal and seasonal influenza) as well as special vaccines should be given to these patients.

Patients who were not followed up or vaccinated in the pre-dialysis period should be vaccinated when starting dialysis treatment.
